For nearly two decades, a photograph quietly stored in a family album told a story that nobody could have predicted. It showed a teenage Lionel Messi, then a rising Barcelona player, holding a baby during a charity photoshoot. Years later, that same child would emerge as one of football’s brightest young stars – Lamine Yamal.
The image, which resurfaced on social media in 2024 and went viral again as the football world followed Yamal’s rapid rise, captured an extraordinary coincidence; one of the greatest players in football history had unknowingly crossed paths with a future generation-defining talent when that talent was still an infant.
The photograph was real, not artificial intelligence-generated or digitally altered, as some online users initially suspected. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that the image came from a charity photoshoot organised more than 18 years ago, involving Messi, Yamal and his mother, Sheila.
A meeting nobody expected
The story began in 2007 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. Messi was 19 years old and still establishing himself as one of the most exciting young players in world football. Yamal, born on 13 July 2007, was only a few months old.
The photoshoot was part of a fundraising initiative linked to UNICEF and Barcelona. The project brought together Barcelona players and children from the Catalan community for a charity calendar. The aim was to support UNICEF programmes while creating images connecting football stars with supporters.
Yamal’s family became involved after participating in a community project in Rocafonda, the neighbourhood in Mataró where his family lived. Through a raffle organised as part of the initiative, baby Lamine and his mother were selected to participate.
Nobody knew at the time that the child in the photographs would eventually become a symbol of a new generation of footballers.
Photographer Joan Monfort captured the moment. He later explained that Messi was a shy teenager at the time and had little experience handling babies. The photoshoot required patience, with the team using simple techniques to help create a relaxed atmosphere.
The resulting photographs disappeared into history until Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared them publicly years later. Their release came at a time when Lamine Yamal was becoming a global football sensation following his breakthrough at Barcelona and his role in Spain’s success at UEFA Euro 2024.
The rise of Lamine Yamal
Yamal’s journey from a child in Mataró to one of football’s most recognised young talents has been remarkable.
A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Yamal made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2023 at just 15 years old, becoming one of the youngest players ever to appear for the club’s first team.
