Harare – In a gesture of charity, the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) donated assistive devices to St Giles Rehabilitation Centre. The Centre is a non-governmental organisation involved in the rehabilitation of both adults and children with all types of physical disability and boasts of a highly trained professional staff, contemporary technology and best administrative practice.
Speaking to this publication Ringisai Batiya, Marketing and Public Relations Consultant at ICZ said the donation was part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
“We handed over 60 assistive devices to road accident victims and disabled children identified through the St Giles rehabilitation Centre. The donation was raised through proceeds from our Annual Charity Golf Tournament,” said Batiya.
St Giles rehabilitation centre work involve to rehabilitate the injured or sick person and return them to society at the highest physical and functional level and to provide assessment, therapy and management of children with physical, sensory and learning difficulties.
Some of the therapy services offered at St Giles Rehabilitation Centre are physiotherapy, the treatment of pain, injury, or disease using physical means as opposed to medical, surgical or radiological. The other common one is occupational therapy which enables patients to reach their optimal level of functional independence in the areas of self-care (dressing, getting in and out of bath), leisure (hobbies, sports) and productivity (housework, employment). The Centre also offers speech therapy which is concerned with communication disorders in children and adults after injury or disability among other therapies.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Dr Grace Muradzikwa, Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) Commissioner said over 40% of the industry’s business is motor.
“I am aware that they have been deliberate in funding programs that promote road safety. Today, we celebrate not just the handover of wheelchairs, and assisted devices but the empowerment of road accident victims.”
ICZ has a remarkable history of responding to needs in the community and implementing high-impact CSR projects that bring both immediate and long-term relief to communities. In 2014, ICZ donated 5 fire trucks to the Fire Brigade. In 2019 it provided relief to Cyclone Idai victims by donating 2300 blankets. Constructed a new classroom block, an administration and ablution block at Rutengeni Primary and Secondary School. ICZ also ran a feeding scheme for 6 months at the school.
During Covid 19 era, in 2020 the Council donated 50,000 litres of fuel to CPU, PPE equipment and food hampers to the red zone employees at Parirenyatwa Hospital. In 2022 the organisation donated state-of-the-art ambulances to the Ministry of Health through the President and the rehabilitation of the Ruwa Hydrotherapy Pool.
