The 6th Biennial Conference of African Science Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) concluded after four days of discussions, debates, and debates. As plans were developed, resolves were written, and alliances were formed, the story reached its conclusion. Governments promised assistance, IT firms provided funds, and professional associations shared their knowledge. The plan for a decentralized healthcare system in Africa developed at the ASLM Conference, which served as a hub for future visioning.
“Capacity requires us to partner to deadlock national strategies and sustainable funding mechanisms. First Day – The Changing Landscape for Medicine
A thorough summary of the event’s first day made clear that the main emphasis of the day was on the potential and difficulties facing laboratory medicine in the twenty-first century. Three main issues served as the framework for the discussions: cutting-edge technologies, planetary medicine, and new health risks.
During a dedicated session, special focus was paid to the future of genomics in Africa, examining the possible developments and uses of genomic research on the continent. A symposium also explored the application of mobile labs and how they may be used to address issues that are specific to Africa.
Experts at the event engaged in discussions on microbial resistance and diagnostics, emphasising the importance of finding solutions and delivering diagnostic tools to communities in need. The day’s schedule combined talks on cutting-edge technologies, dangers to global health, and regional difficulties, reflecting a comprehensive approach to addressing current issues in laboratory medicine.
“And we looked at consultation of our workforce so as to advance and the development in that medicine. We also looked at how we can embrace artificial intelligence and how we can incorporate the One Health approach in diagnostic value chain. And then we had various oral abstracts as well as posters and then a variety of topics, including antimicrobial resistance for the day,” said Dr. Kenny Sami.
Another plenary debate on cutting-edge and disruptive technology for laboratory medicine diagnostics was held on the first day. Manufacturers and industry partners emphasized the importance of Africa’s genomics future, putting the region at the forefront of developments in this area.
The conference’s stakeholders agreed that working together is necessary to overcome industrial genomics’ obstacles. They agreed that the success of these initiatives depends on bioinformatics assistance, especially when it comes to research and development in Africa.
One of the presenters’ main points was that public-private collaborations will be essential to the advancement of the discipline given the difficulties in the African lab environment. This emphasizes how crucial collaboration is between public and private sectors as well as other interested parties in order to overcome challenges and promote advancements in laboratory medicine in Africa.
Professor Jude Dzevela Kong emphasised during a dynamic talk on artificial intelligence (AI) that AI is not just a possibility of the future but is already a reality. The professor exhorted lab diagnostics researchers and practitioners to actively embrace AI as a game-changing technology. The professor did, however, also stress the significance of thorough planning and the necessity of setting up appropriate regulatory channels to guarantee that ethical frameworks are in place.
Day Two: Overcoming Obstacles: The Positive, the Negative, and the Unexpected
Dr. Kamy Chetty brought attention to a special session that focused on changing density, specifically highlighting the contributions of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and computer science. There were four symposia that followed. In order to address both communicable and non-communicable diseases, one conference explored cooperative techniques. A third symposium centered on network and service optimization, while another addressed innovation and waste management.
Roundtable discussions were a key component of the event, exploring the power of community practice and the significance of knowledge within communities. Potential collaborations were discussed in order to provide fair and long-lasting access to diagnostics.
A particular roundtable discussion examined the opportunities and problems related to career prospects and retention of scientists in Africa. Furthermore, the poster session mirrored the issues discussed in the four side sessions, which included topics including genomic sequencing, innovation, and quality assurance. This extensive agenda demonstrates a careful examination of many facets of laboratory medicine, ranging from community involvement and scientific career development to transformational technologies.
“One which stood out the most was the ASLM lab directors forum launch or the lab DF. So there are now to pay attention to laboratory governance. And leadership and governance needs to be innovative,” said Chetty.
Dr. Iruka Okeke presented the importance of aligning the roadmap for genomics and variants of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) with the simultaneous growth of clinical bacteriology and bacterial genomics. The objective was to maximize resource use and make a significant impact on public health by utilizing the research and academic sectors’ capacity.
The emphasis was on transitioning from a traditionally reactive strategy to a proactive one, ensuring that the nation’s infrastructure is not only developed but also maintained to keep up with emerging areas in laboratory work, such as task shifting and planetary health.
Day Three: Strategies for advancing laboratory medicine in the twenty-first century
There was an emphasis on the critical importance of data and its strategic use in achieving public health goals. Specifically, the presenter addressed the challenges related to data interoperability, pointing out the complexity of dealing with 55 countries that have different systems. Dr. Ndeme emphasised how challenging it is to create a unified laboratory information system or a more comprehensive health information system when dealing with the wide variations in current systems across nations.
This highlights the need for coordinated efforts and creative solutions to get over the challenges of harmonizing data systems across various national settings, she said. The objective is probably to improve cooperation, information exchange, and the general efficacy of public health programs on a larger scale.
“So we need to build up networks in the backbone are part of our National Public Health Institutes as part of pandemic preparedness, prevention and response as well. So, let’s move to the community. You have to engage in community and clinical trust, really all set to ensure that we are actually speaking the same language or the product,” said Ndeme.
An appeal for action
All of the reports that were given during the event included calls to action and emphasised the necessity of collaborations between public and private organizations. The case statements highlighted Africa’s potential for development and pointed out the systems that are required to fortify the existing stakeholder processes on the continent. This shows that participants are committed to working together to improve laboratory medicine and healthcare systems in Africa.
The ASLM community also took a minute to honour notable individuals who have significantly advanced laboratory medicine and healthcare in Africa due to their passing. This accolade is a testament to the important contributions made by those who have advanced the field and the African healthcare community.

“Firstly, ASLM and Illumina entered into a memorandum of understanding designed to expand the use of genomics in Africa and prepare for future pandemics and safeguard the health of Africans. Number two, we also excited that the Lab Directors’ Forum, a unique platform to elevate the voices if the directors have been endorsed by ministry of Health who were here. Number three, ASLM and Africa CDC have made a call that the laboratory is sufficiently represented in in-country financial resources allocation. Lastly, ASLM launched a new membership that will see its members being upgraded into lab pro members and are entitled to exclusive benefits which includes mentorship among others,” said Ndlovu
